SIS Board

Board of Directors

SIS is a non-profit foundation governed by a self-perpetuating board of trustees. The board is composed of eight volunteers representing the main stakeholder groups of the school’s community. The constituency of the board encompasses members of the diplomatic core and the international and national private sector in Paramaribo. The board is guided in its governance by the foundation’s articles of incorporation, the board policy manual, and the expectations of our accrediting agency.

The board is entrusted with overseeing the overall, long term development of the school in accordance with SIS educational goals and philosophy. The role of the board is to determine and evaluate broad policy for the school, not to involve itself in daily affairs. The board operates as a group and, as such, board members do not have administrative authority when acting alone unless specifically delegated by the board for a specific task. The board employs a chief administrator to handle the daily operation of the school.

Prior to their selection, board members should have demonstrated professional experience in areas such as education, business, accounting, law, finance, human resources, and diplomacy. Board membership is considered a privilege; hence it is a non-remunerated activity. Also, board members are required to have irrefutable probity and must hold themselves to the maximum ethical standards in their exercise of board duties.

Board members are advocates for international education and work closely with the school director and management team to preserve the institution’s purpose and direction and use actual results for the continuous academic improvement and school effectiveness.

As the school is a Foundation, not a private enterprise, the board is accountable to the SIS parents and families. It shall provide clear and transparent information to stakeholder groups on a regular basis. As an accredited school, the board is ultimately responsible for maintaining the accreditation requirements of AdvancED.

A Voice for All

SIS’s governance structure nurtures the open dialogue that ensures that the views of all members of the school community are taken into account and represented.
