Denise Giorello-Moczulski, Director

Ms. Giorello-Moczulski was born and raised in New Jersey in the Unites States of America. She has thirty-one years of experience in education including eighteen years in educational leadership and administration. Her experience includes public and private school in the United States as well as international experience in Japan. In addition to a Bachelor of Music degree, Ms. Giorello-Moczulski holds a Master of Arts degree in music and a Master of Education degree in educational leadership and administration.

Ms. Giorello-Moczulski believes that schools must continually evolve and adapt in order to successfully provide 21st century learning designed to allow students to master content while simultaneously producing, synthesizing, and evaluating information from a wide variety of subjects and sources with an understanding of and respect for diverse cultures. In addition to traditional competencies, it is essential that students master the skills of creativity, communication, and collaboration. They must learn digital literacy as well as civic responsibility. Schools need to provide multiple environments, including virtual, where children can learn the skills and the knowledge necessary to be successful in an ever expanding global milieu.


Karlijn Paulus, Kindergarten

Karlijn Paulus, Kindergarten

 Karlijn Paulus-Habraken originates from Lelystad, the Netherlands. After high school, Karlijn took a year to serve in India at the Baha’i House of Worship in New Delhi where she volunteered her time as a guide. In 1998, Karlijn started her higher education to become a primary school teacher at the Noordelijke Hogeschool Leeuwarden and earned her bachelor of education degree. After graduating, she traveled to Suriname where she did a year of service in education in the interior of the country. Karlijn then returned to the Netherlands and worked at De Brug, a school for disabled children in Rotterdam. In 2003, Karlijn married her husband and returned with him to Suriname. She worked at the Nassy Brouwer School, a private Surinamese school in Paramaribo as a primary teacher through 2004. After a few years off to raise her family, she returned to teaching at the Prinses Amalia private Dutch school in Paramaribo from 2006 to 2010. Karlijn is a founding teacher at SIS and she is very excited to be working in her first international school. In her spare time, Karlijn likes to be creative in the arts, dancing, and swimming while juggling her household duties.


Sabrina Somojiono, Grades 1 and 2

Sabrina Somojiono was born and raised in Paramaribo, Suriname. After graduating from the Advanced Teachers Training Institute, in 2015, Sabrina started as a Teaching Assistant at Suriname International School. She is really excited to start this new school year with her own class and has lots of fun learning plans.

In her free time, she really enjoys spending time with friends and family or just staying at home with her three dogs.


Eston Mwape: Teacher Assistant, Grades 1 and 2

Eston Mwape was born and raised on the copperbelt in Zambia, Southern Africa. He was popular for breaking his mum’s plate as a child, dreaming about drums. He started playing drums when he was 11 years old. After college, he moved to the capital, Lusaka, and continued playing drums professionally. He has toured the country and neighbouring countries with both gospel and circular artists in Zambia.

Since 2013 he has been nominated best drummer in the Zambia Music awards (ZMAs) and he won best drummer in 2015 by Judges Adjudication.  He has provided kids with private drum lessons and loves working with them because of their ability to learn fast. He believes that it is important to teach kids art so that they develop their creativity, passion and team work. He has an advanced diploma in business management that he studied at Zambia Institute of business and Industrial Practice (ZIBSIP) in 2010. He followed his Surinamese partner to Suriname who he met in Zambia. Over the weekends he has musical events and sometimes attends musical events.  He is very  enthusiastic  working in an international environment with kids as an assistant teacher at SIS.


Margaretta Jones, Grades 3 and 4

Margaretta Jones, Grades 3 and 4

 Margaretta A. Jones is from the island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. She has been in the teaching profession for the past twenty-two years. She has had the opportunity to teach from early childhood level to adult learners. Margaretta holds a teacher’s diploma in elementary education from the Corinth Teachers’ College, Trinidad, a bachelor’s degree specializing in early childhood care and education from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad, and a master’s degree in international education from Framingham State College in Massachusetts, USA. She has taught at various elementary schools in Trinidad, both public and private, adult literacy with an NGO and the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Tertiary Education, and also managed an ECCE Centre run by the Ministry of Education in Trinidad. She enjoys engaging in the teaching and learning process at all levels. 


Nicole Grant, Grades 5-6

Nicole was born and raised in Suriname. She has a degree in Biology from the Advanced Teacher College of Suriname. She says that choosing her career path was easy because she has always enjoyed working with children.


Joanna Smith, Grade 7-8

Joanna Smith, Grade 7-8

 Joanna Smith was born and raised in the United States. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from Tennessee Technological University.  She has taught at various schools and at various grade levels in the United States. She moved to Suriname in 2013 with her husband and children. 

 


Cindy Gopie, High School Coordinator/Literacy

Cindy Gopie was born and raised in the Netherlands and moved to Suriname in 2009 with her family. She has studied English at the Advanced Training Teachers Institute in Suriname and received her MO-A. She enjoys teaching and working with children and loves to live in Suriname. She likes the weather, the nature, the people and she also met her husband here. Cindy enjoys the little things in life and is a very optimistic person. In her spare time, she likes to do some cooking and baking, making jigsaw puzzles and spending time with her husband and family. Cindy was offered the opportunity to start her career as a teacher at the Suriname International School and is excited and motivated to teach.


Ernestina Garcia Pupo, Spanish & Library Teacher

I was born in Holguin city, located in the eastern part of Cuba. I graduated from the Pedagogical Teachers College of this city in 1995. My degree is in Education, major in English language. Since this date, I have taught at secondary schools. I love my profession because to teach and educate are arts you really must feel very deep inside.


Valerie Setrosentono

Valerie Setrosentono

Valerie Setrosentono is the Physical Education teacher at Suriname International School. This is her third year as the PE teacher. Valerie Setrosentono attended the Teacher's college in Suriname and obtained her MOA degree.


Tessa Stefanie Sumter, Public Relations and Office Manager

Ms. Tessa Sumter was born and raised in Paramaribo, Suriname. She has begun her studies in Public Administration/International Relations at the Anton the Kom University of Suriname and has completed her first year.

Further, she has received her certificate in Hospitality Management & Tourism at the Suriname College of Hospitality (SCH&T)

While studying, she started her career as a sales representative. Working her way up, she worked as a front-desk manager/assistant junior consultant at Buck Consultant/Pension of Suralco.

At the State Oil Company of Suriname (Staatsolie), she also developed her working and planning skills as an administrative assistant.

Steve Moezel, Support Staff

An integral part of the SIS team since the first day the school opened its doors, Steve does a little bit of everything at the Suriname International School. He provides handiwork assistance, runs errands, makes phone calls, provides security, and even serves as crossing guard whenever the students attend P.E. class in the gym across the street from the school building.
