Entrance Requirements

As a school that works closely with the expatriate community of Paramaribo, the Suriname International School accepts students throughout the school year. This is dependent upon space availability in the classroom and the successful completion of the admissions process.

SIS accepts both Surinamese and International students of all religious and cultural backgrounds. We embrace our differences as much as our similarities.

Procedure for Application

The objective of the admissions process is to determine if the student can perform adequately and be successful in the grade to which he/she is applying.

Acceptance to the Suriname International School is not automatic. A child’s evaluation performance, previous school records, standardized test results, letters of recommendation, and other previous educational information are evaluated. Some students may be denied admission when their test performance and/or previous school performance does not meet SIS’s expectations. Since schools vary in grade level expectations, this assessment will also determine the appropriate grade placement for the child.

Proficiency in English

For many students, SIS may be their first experience at an English speaking school. Applicants in third grade and up with limited English proficiency may be enrolled as English as a Foreign Language students. This means that they will be assessed using different criteria as they develop their English skills. It is important that these students work to learn a basic level of English as quickly as possible. Under certain conditions students may be accepted on the prerequisite that additional English support is provided at home. Students in Pre-Kindergarten to second grade are not required to have grade level English as these students are able to develop proficiency in English before subjects become more academically demanding.

Applicants Requiring Learning Support

SIS welcomes all new students; however some students may require learning support above what we offer at SIS. When completing your application, it is important to provide as much information as possible about your child’s requirements, including any special education needs and reports. We would not want to admit a child unless we are equipped to successfully educate him/her. This would not be doing the child any favors, nor would it be fair to the other students at the school. As well you would forfeit fees paid due to nondisclosure. If your child has a learning difficulty or has received learning support in the past, please contact the Director to discuss the suitability of placement at SIS before submitting an application.

Age Requirements

Please see the age requirements below to determine your child’s age for the entrance grade level. Students must be the appropriate age prior to December 31st of the current school year to enter SIS, although some exceptions are made depending on a number of factors. We will consider placing students in a higher grade if there are extenuating circumstances such as prior school records, outcome of placement tests, and an interview with the Director. The final decision will be the sole discretion of the Director.

The following are the age requirements: Pre-K: 4 / Kindergarten: 5 / Grade 1: 6 / Grade 2: 7 / Grade 3: 8, and so on.

Please note that children will be accepted into Pre-K at any time during the school year after their fourth birthday. Students with birthdays after December 31st, will remain in pre-K until they meet the above expectations.
