Elementary (Grades 1 to 6)

Welcome to Elementary School where we help students build a solid academic foundation that will help them throughout their lives. Our standards based program is aligned with the U.S. Common Core and adjusted to meet the needs of our unique international school community.

Our program is based on the fact that children learn best by doing and experimenting. Teachers design lessons that carefully guide students through the learning process and help them to discover new knowledge and skills. Students learn content, critical thinking skills, the importance of collaboration, and develop a sense of self-worth and confidence in their abilities.

SIS incorporates a number of highly recognized educational programs such as reading and writing workshops, Words Their Way, the Singapore Approach to Math, and guided reading, among others. Each classroom is equipped with its own library of engaging books carefully chosen to meet the students' own reading levels, interests, and abilities. Computers and multimedia technology are incorporated into each classroom as well.

Internal and externally administered standardized assessments are used to help teachers gather data about each student's learning and tailor learning for each student. Teachers also use this data to make improvements and revisions to the educational program and lessons throughout the school year to ensure that students receive the best education possible.

Students attend world language classes (Spanish, Dutch, or English for Speakers of Other Languages) three times a week. The visit the library regularly and are able to borrow a wide variety of books. They attend PE class in the gymnasium across the street twice a week.
